What the crime rate check includes
12-month crime totals by category
Every Police.uk crime category — burglary, vehicle crime, anti-social behaviour, violent offences and more — shown as a 12-month total for the property's immediate neighbourhood.
Month-by-month trend
A single total can hide a neighbourhood in rapid decline or one rapidly improving. We show the monthly breakdown so you can see whether crime is rising, falling or stable over the past year.
Comparison to local average
A 12-month total means little without context. We show how the property's area compares to the surrounding district so you know whether the level is typical or an outlier.
Insurance implications
High burglary or vehicle crime rates can increase home and car insurance premiums. Some insurers apply postcode-level risk ratings — knowing the crime level before you buy lets you get accurate quotes in advance.
Anti-social behaviour
ASB is often the most day-to-day impactful crime type for residents and frequently underweighted by buyers. We show the ASB count and trend separately from other crime categories.
Street-level granularity
Crime is mapped to the nearest road junction, not just the postcode. This means you get data relevant to the street you're buying on, not a diluted postcode average that can mask local variation.

Frequently asked questions
Where does the crime data come from?
Property Snapshot pulls crime data from Police.uk, which is the official open-data platform for crime statistics in England and Wales. Data is published monthly by every police force and covers crimes reported at street level, making it the most granular public crime data available in the UK.
How recent is the crime data?
Police.uk data is published monthly, typically with a 2–3 month lag. A report run today will usually show crime figures through to the previous 2–3 months. We show the 12-month rolling total for each crime category so you can see both the level and the recent trend.
What crime categories are included?
We show all Police.uk categories: anti-social behaviour, burglary, criminal damage and arson, drugs, robbery, shoplifting, theft from the person, vehicle crime, violent and sexual offences, and other crime. The 12-month total and the month-by-month trend are both included.
Is the crime data for the specific street or a wider area?
Police.uk provides street-level data, meaning crimes are mapped to the nearest street or road junction rather than a precise building. Our report shows the crime count for a defined radius around the property, giving a representative picture of the immediate neighbourhood rather than just a single point.
Does crime data cover Scotland?
Police.uk covers England and Wales only. Crime data for Scotland is published separately by Police Scotland and is not currently included in the Police.uk API. For Scottish addresses, Property Snapshot indicates this and provides the postcode context available.
Can I use crime data to negotiate a lower price?
Above-average crime rates for the area type — particularly if trending upward — are a relevant factor in a property's value and your day-to-day experience. While crime data alone is rarely a negotiating lever the way flood risk or EPC rating is, a significant outlier compared to surrounding streets is worth raising and documenting.
